In the summer of 2017, during a residency at Cambridge Artworks Caravanserai, Julie Sleaford and Vic Dawson explored the mysterious and unexplained, probing the relationship between uncertainties and belief systems.
They invited the public to visit 'The Mobile Laboratory for Extraordinary Research' where they had converted a caravan into a lens-less pinhole camera and darkroom. Participants then posed outside of the caravan to create an image that travelled through time and space to become imprinted onto photographic paper.
In addition to the photograph, visitors’ stories of unexplained events were recorded onto audio tape, which further explored attitudes to uncanny or mysterious happenings.
Sleaford and Dawson also wanted to investigate how certain objects hold a powerful resonance that goes beyond being a simple possession. Objects which held special significance for the visitor were photographed in the pitch black of the dark room caravan using a flash that captured their belongings in a frozen moment.
The results of their research are shown in 'Dark Room' at Cambridge Artworks ArtSpace Gallery from Friday 2nd March to Sunday 4th March.
